Why Should You Live for the Benefit of Everyone?
Why Should You Live for the Benefit of Everyone?
For one thing, I would like to live in a world where the benefits of everyone are equally valued. The world can indeed be a better place when we prioritize what is beneficial to both ourselves and others. However, the notion that ‘you alone making sacrifices for the benefit of everyone else’ is often misunderstood and can be seen as impractical. It’s natural to want benefits for oneself, but it is also important to recognize the interconnectedness of our lives and the benefits we can bring to one another.
Meritorious Acts According to Buddha
Buddha, the Enlightened One, emphasized the importance of certain actions that can bring merit to the doer. In one Sutra, the Buddha described five acts of merit that are beneficial to oneself and others:
Paying Taxes: Contributing to the well-being of society through fair taxation. Performing Acts of Merit: Engaging in deeds that benefit others, such as helping the less fortunate. Transferring Merits to Deceased Relatives: Honoring and remembering loved ones by transferring the benefits of one's actions to them. Caring for Friends and Relatives: Assisting friends and relatives when they visit or need help. Providing Best Service: Offering the best service to clients or customers in one's professional life, a concept known as customer service.Living for Others and Personal Fulfillment
There’s a misconception that living for others might detract from one's own happiness. However, the reality is that living with a focus on others can make life more fulfilling. When you live with an attitude of care and compassion, you not only make others happy but also find joy in your interactions.
Out of compassion and love, we can strive to make a positive impact on people's lives while still prioritizing our own well-being. As the Buddha highlighted, the five acts of merit are not only acts of goodness but also supportive of one’s own merit. This balance between selfless service and self-care is essential for a fulfilling life.
Interconnectedness and Respect
It’s also important to consider how we were brought up. Many believe that pleasing others is a sign of respect, which is not always the case. Respecting others is vital, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that one must sacrifice their own well-being. Rather, respect and consideration for others can be achieved by fostering healthy, supportive relationships and by recognizing the value of mutual benefit.
Thus, the key is to find a balance between caring for oneself and caring for others. When we see our actions as benefiting not only ourselves but also those around us, we create a world where everyone thrives. This approach fosters a sense of community and interconnectedness, making our lives richer and more meaningful.
