Why High School Should Excite You

For many, the idea of high school can seem mundane or even unexciting. However, it is a time of immense growth and opportunity, both intellectually and socially. This article aims to highlight the facets of high school that should get you excited, focusing on educational growth, social connections, and preparing for the future.

The Value of Educational Growth

High school is not just about learning new things, but it's also about stretching your mind and understanding the world around you in a more profound way. You will encounter a diverse range of subjects, from sciences to humanities, that will challenge and inspire you in ways you might not expect.

Joining Clubs and Engaging in Extracurricular Activities

The clubs and activities available in high school are often overlooked, but they are the lifeblood of the high school experience. Be it the debate team, science club, or Young Conservatives as in my case, these groups offer a platform for you to explore your interests, discuss topics you care about, and make lasting memories. For example, in my senior year, I was part of the Young Conservatives club, where we discussed national news and the principles of conservatism. It was a rewarding experience to see how many people were interested in similar topics, despite the initial expectation of low turnout.

Building Strong Connections

High school is more than just a place to study. It is a community of individuals who share common goals and challenges. The relationships you build during these years can have a profound impact on your personal and professional life.

Engaging with Teachers and Peers

To make high school exciting and rewarding, you need to put in the effort and enthusiasm. Ask your teachers what it takes to earn an A in their class. Set a study schedule and create a system to keep yourself on track. Join study groups with other motivated students. These actions will not only improve your academic performance but also enrich your social experience.

Extracurricular Involvements and School Events

Participate in school clubs, sports teams, or intramural activities. Attend school events and volunteer for community service. These activities will help you develop leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of community.

Preparing for the Future

High school is a one-time experience that sets the foundation for your future. It is a stepping stone to college, university, vocational school, or the military. Use these four years to your advantage, to build a strong academic and social foundation that will serve you well in the years to come.

High School vs. Real Life

High school is often an artificial environment, but it is far from the reality you will encounter once you leave. Here’s why:

Academic Performance and Character

In real life, being smart and academically successful is not the only factor that determines your success. A kind and considerate attitude is equally, if not more, important. The time it takes you to run a mile is not a crucial measure of your success in life. In real life, you can enjoy peanuts and tree nuts whenever you want them. People will measure you based on your character and contributions, not the brand of clothes or the type of car you drive.

Growth Beyond High School

If you thrive in the society of high school, you might have four years of happiness and positive experiences ahead of you. However, if you find that high school is not a good social fit, take comfort in the fact that in just four years, you will have accumulated valuable knowledge and experience. This will help you start building your real life, into the one you desire.

Whether you find high school thrilling or not, it is an irreplaceable part of your personal development. Embrace the opportunities it offers and create the high school experience that excites and inspires you.
