The Respect and Merit of Military Personnel

Soldiers are vital to safeguarding our nations and their own. They do not all come from a single background or hold the same beliefs, yet all honor their oath to protect their respective nations and their values. This article explores why we should hold soldiers in high regard and examines the diverse experiences within the military community.

Admiration for Soldiers

As a veteran, I hold a profound respect for my fellow soldiers and their dedication to their duties. We were not all choir boys or devoutly religious; yet, we were good at what was required of us and honored our oath. Our training, discipline, and willingness to sacrifice anything at a moment's notice demand our respect and admiration.

A Civilian's Perspective on Military Duty

Understanding what soldiers face can be difficult for those who have not experienced military life. As someone who has navigated the complexities of military service, I can attest to the immense respect and honor that soldiers deserve. We were not choir boys, nor were we necessarily God-fearing, but we were capable of what was necessary, covering each other’s backs and upholding our duty. Our responsibilities often required us to put our lives on the line, a job that very few others can truly appreciate.

Critical Outlook on Military Personnel

While soldiers are overwhelmingly dedicated and honorable, it is also true that there are anomalies. In recent times, incidents like corruption charges against two Major Generals in India have shown that any organization can have individuals who do not uphold the values they claim to embody. However, it is the vast majority of soldiers who stand guard for their nations, both within and without their borders. Their discipline, training, and readiness to perform any task deserve our admiration.

The Extent of Military Service

It matters greatly how you view those in the military. To focus solely on the Army is to ignore the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. Millions have served, and countless books have been written about their experiences. In times of natural disaster, soldiers are often the first to respond, rescuing their fellow citizens. Even when some may have had negative experiences, soldiers who have served honorably, and perhaps paid the ultimate price, deserve our respect and gratitude.

Respect for All Military Personnel

It is important to recognize that not everyone has positive memories or experiences with the military. Some may have had negative experiences, such as those drafted into service during conflicts like the Vietnam War or the Korean War. These veterans’ sacrifices and hardships are just as valid and deserve acknowledgment. By recognizing the diverse experiences within the military, we can foster a more inclusive and respectful society that appreciates the service and dedication of all those who have worn the uniform.

As we reflect on the role of soldiers in our societies, it is crucial to remember that their service extends beyond the battlefield. They are real people who, through their actions, have shaped the world as we know it today. Their bravery, discipline, and commitment to their oaths are worth our admiration and respect, and they deserve the gratitude of every nation they protect.
