The concept of eternal life as depicted in the Bible is deeply intertwined with the idea of God Himself. Unlike a separate existence, eternal life is sourced from God, the eternal being. When one has God in Christ as the Spirit, they harbor the very life of the eternal God within them. This is epitomized by Christ's declaration, 'I am the life,' underscoring that eternal life is an embodiment of the Triune God's essence, which resides in Christ and is made available to believers. Through this divine life, humanity can mirror God's likeness and achieve unity with Him, countering the adversary—Satan. In this way, the eternal life within us enables us to represent God, not just as adopted sons but as His true offspring, born of divine essence.
The tree of life, symbolized in the Bible, represents the infusion of God's spirit into humanity, much like food nourishes our bodies. Just as we consume food to survive and thrive, the tree of life signifies that ultimate dependency on God's eternal life is necessary for human beings to embody His image and likeness, replicating His divine life within their very being. This connection is critical because only those who are sustained by the divine life can rescue humanity from the chaos and darkness brought about by sin. Jesus, the ultimate expression of the divine life, came to earth and continuously fed upon this tree, embodying divine life that He would later impart to humanity.
The Gift of an Unrestrained Spiritual Body and Reigning with God
The joyous news encompassed in the gift of eternal life is the promise of a spiritual body and eternal reign with God. God created beings who, once created, cannot be destroyed; hence, after death, the spirits of humans will appear before Jesus for judgment. As stated in Hebrews 9:27 and 2 Corinthians 5:10, judgment determines whether one is awarded heaven or hell. Those who successfully pass this divine test will ultimately be welcomed into heaven.
Following death, the spirit lives on without the burden of a physical body, alleviating the need for earthly limitations. According to 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 and 1 Corinthians 15:3:42, at the end of time, believers will receive a new, imperishable spiritual body that unites spirit and soul in a state of perfection. Just as seeds die and hatch into new life, our earthly bodies will be planted, die, and then be raised to eternal life. Our current bodies, buried in brokenness and weakness, will be transformed into glorious and powerful spiritual bodies, akin to natural human bodies but elevated to divine essence.
The Resurrection and Transformation
The resurrection of the dead is a crucial element in the journey towards eternal life. Similar to how seeds are planted and regrow, our earthly bodies will be planted when we die but will be resurrected to live forever. As detailed in 1 Corinthians 15:35-58, the return of the seed to life parallels our resurrection. When we are buried, our bodies signify death and decay, but when raised, they embody the renewed, powerful, and spiritual state. Just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies, created in God's image and destined for eternal glory.
