Revisiting the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy: A Fan’s Perspective
Revisiting the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy: A Fan’s Perspective
Introduction
As a fan of the Star Wars saga, the sequel trilogy has been a deep dive into the continuation of the story. One of the most controversial elements of the second trilogy is the The Last Jedi, and within it, a particular scene has garnered significant attention and criticism. In this article, we explore my thoughts on revising the scene where Luke and Rey first meet on Ahch-To. Additionally, we will discuss my views on the trilogy as a whole, focusing on its strengths and areas that could be refined.
Revisiting the Lightsaber Scene
The moment in The Last Jedi where Luke returns to Ahch-To to finally meet Rey has been met with mixed opinions. Personally, I believe this scene could be improved in a few key ways. Firstly, the reasons leading to the estrangement between Luke and Rey seem to be somewhat unclear. Instead of making Luke look terrible, I would have preferred a more understandable narrative that clearly defines their conflict.
Another element that I would change is the revelation of Rey’s true lineage. In the film, Rey being Palpatine’s granddaughter adds an unnecessary and complicated layer to the story. I much preferred her to be a nobody with great Force potential who is corrupted by Palpatine. This storyline is more in line with his character motivation, and it aligns better with the prequels where we see Palpatine’s manipulative behavior.
Anger and the Outcome
The encounter between the First Order and the Rebel fleet in The Last Jedi is a pivotal moment, but it is marred by Hux's aggressive behavior. His anger and desire to triumph only serve to heighten the tension. However, rather than focusing on their anger, the scene could have been enhanced by showcasing the First Order's strategic triumph. Instead, the focus on Hux's aggression detracts from the potential for viewing the First Order as heroes on any level. For instance, it would have been more compelling to see a short but intense skirmish where the First Order fleet outmaneuvers the Rebels and emerges victorious.
The Leia and Luke Interlude
Fan expectations were not met in the sequel trilogy when it comes to the inclusion of certain characters, such as Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker being together in the same scene. This absence of interactions between pivotal characters is a significant oversight. A scene where Han, Leia, and Luke interact fully would have been a fantastic way to enhance the storytelling and provide closure for long-time fans.
From an emotional and character development standpoint, a reunion scene with all three could have solidified their relationships and added depth to the narrative. It would have been a unifying moment that brought closure to past storylines while paving the way for the sequel trilogy's narrative.
Conclusion
While the sequel trilogy has its flaws, the performances and the humanity of the main characters are consistently excellent, making it a step forward from the original trilogy. There is still room for improvement, particularly in conflicts and interactions between key characters. Overall, the trilogy is a mix of strengths and areas that could benefit from a fresh perspective and revision.
