Reflections on Bumblebee: A Non-Transformers Perspective
Reflections on Bumblebee: A Non-Transformer's Perspective
The 2018 live-action Bumblebee movie has garnered a mix of opinions, with many finding it a unique take on the rather conventional Transformers franchise. My own experience with the film was largely positive, despite some reservations about the design choices.
Likes: The Opening Scene and Character Features
What particularly stood out was the opening scene, which featured a multitude of characters and a nod to the 1986 film that The Transformers often references. This thematic connection adds a layer of depth to the narrative, making the film more enjoyable for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
Of all the design choices, Bumblebee's distinctive appearance caught my eye. While I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of the overall design choices in the film, Bumblebee's simplistic look and his ability to morph into a Volkswagen Beetle struck a chord with me. The simplicity and the familiarity of the Volkswagen Beetle give the characters in this film a more tangible and relatable feel.
Main Human Characters: Real Actors, Not CGI
Another aspect I appreciated was the main human characters. Rather than relying extensively on CGI, the film seems to have opted for actual actors, which makes a significant difference in the authenticity of the characters. This choice adds to the charm of the film, making it more engaging and relatable.
Dislikes: The TF Designs and Vibes
However, the film did have its share of design flaws. The Transformers' designs were a bit of a letdown. It seemed as though the designers were torn between copying the G1 designs and the Bayverse designs, resulting in a middle-ground design that was less appealing to me. Optimus Prime, however, looked pretty good with a balance of G1 elements and a modern Bayverse style.
Going into the film, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I thought I would dislike it more than I did, especially given my expectations rooted in the Michael Bay films. The inclusion of actual Transformers in action, looking like themselves and not relying on the bizarre super-articulated features of the Bay films, brought a fresh perspective to the series.
Personal Favorites: 80s Aesthetic and Battle on Cybertron
What made Bumblebee my favorite among the Transformers movies was its 80s feel. From the fashion to the Walkman, the 80s aesthetic was evident, despite me being a teenager at the time. The battle on Cybertron was a standout, a tribute to the animated series and a thrilling climax that brought the narrative to a satisfying close.
While some might find the film underwhelming, my experience was quite enjoyable. It wasn't just another Transformers film but a unique blend of nostalgia and contemporary storytelling. I would recommend it to fans of the series and those looking for a different take on the Transformers universe.
