November is a time when we often focus on mental health awareness, recognizing the importance of our mental well-being and the profound connection between the mind and the body. This month, I have a unique reminder that self-care isn’t just about feeling good; it’s about being proactive about our mental and physical health.

Therapy: A Journey of Healing

Today, I have a therapy session with a new therapist, something I’m really excited about. Therapy wasn’t always my strength. Reflecting back, talking about my feelings used to be a daunting task, but it’s helped me open up and reduce the immense stress in my life. The return of some stress is a perfect opportunity to continue this journey. It’s all part of a holistic approach to mental health.

Your Body and Mind: The Dual Nature

Our body and mind are interconnected, each influencing the other in powerful ways. Just like how physical health affects our mental state, mental health can affect our physical well-being. Therefore, treating them as one unit is crucial. Both must be addressed to truly thrive. This principle is the cornerstone of my personal philosophy and practice.

A Balanced Life and Its Challenges

While I achieve a balanced life—I have a stable job, financial security, and a fulfilling family life—this doesn’t mean I’m completely free from stress. It’s important to be honest about our struggles, as they can be significant contributors to our well-being. Being transparent about these challenges helps maintain a genuine connection with others.

Self-Care and Imperfections

Self-care isn’t just about perfection but about acknowledging that we’re doing the best we can. Today, I faced a chemistry test, a reminder that balancing various aspects of life—be it professional, personal, or health-related—can be challenging. It reinforces the need for flexibility and adaptability.

A Community Perspective on Mental Health

Engage in the dialogue around mental health. I was once a care worker supporting vulnerable adults with autism spectrum disorders, which was incredibly fulfilling. Music also plays a significant role in my life. I compose my own piano music and share it with the world via Spotify. Creativity can be a powerful tool in maintaining mental health and finding joy.

A Day That Isn’t Ordinary

Today, I received a package from Decks Germany, which inspired me to record a DJ session with new records from the Dutch MORD label. This adds an exciting element to my day, reminding me that even in our balanced lives, there are moments of surprise and excitement that contribute to our overall well-being.

Reflecting on my day, it’s clear that mental health is a journey, and it’s something that requires ongoing attention and care. Whether it’s through therapy, self-care, or creative expression, we all have our unique paths to follow. Here’s to embracing the complexities of being human and finding joy in our everyday lives.
