How Does a Writer Get Ideas for Fictional Stories

Professional writers do not generate ideas for fictional stories; they generate ideas for characters. However, in this day and age, they use AI to help them find inspiration. Here are some prompts to get you started:

THE MULTIPLE SOURCES OF INSPIRATION

Authors are inspired by any and every aspect of their human experience and beyond into their imagination. Most creative writing manuals and courses advise writers to always carry something to record potential ideas. You never know when inspiration or an idea for a novel or short story may strike.

Observing the World Around You

As with any genre, you can draw inspiration from anything. For example, you can take close attention to what kids say, and who knows, you might get a best-selling idea out of their stories. So just try and pay close attention to your surroundings and the people that are around you. You will notice little things that can have an amazing story. This practice can help you develop character ideas and settings that are unique and compelling.

Reading

The most important step to learning how to write a genre is reading how others did it. Do your research. Go on Pinterest and search up aesthetics for whatever genre you're trying to write. And then it's honestly just picking and choosing elements you want to incorporate into your books.

Daily Life as a Wellspring of Ideas

Everyday life is full of ideas. Living and conducting normal activities can easily bring forth ideas that can be modified to fiction. History, current events, and your unique reality should all be sources of inspiration. There is no substitute for putting pen to paper or fingers to keys. Try iterating.

Unconventional Inspiration

Ideas actually come up from everywhere and nowhere. A fiction is not an entirely imaginary piece of art; it is somehow inspired in any way possible. It might just be a 2-minute conversation with someone that may inspire you to write a whole novel around it, forming characters and storylines that were never actually mentioned in the conversation. Events from the past, things happening in the present, and everything that you might wish or think could occur in the future for you or anyone or anything around you can end up being your idea for a novel. I have even seen people putting some events they see in their dreams as a part of their book.

I get ideas from music a lot. Like listening to a song, trying to interpret a story behind it, or using it with my characters often gives them a direction and helps me get through the end. Every writer is a great observer; even observing people's reactions to a particular thing or opinion puts light on the various shades of human behaviors and personalities. Then you have to just drive these thoughts throughout your stories.

A Personal Inspiration Story

For example, I made a whole story while randomly listening to music. The sequence of the three songs that my phone played actually gave me an interesting plot line. But it was not until six or seven months later when my mother was recalling something from her childhood, commenting on a rather unjust practice still going on in some places and prevalent in her times, which made me complete my story. The two things blended so well into the life of my characters that it led to a beautiful journey.

So for anyone wanting to write, just open your perception a bit more, look at everything with an eye of interest, and ideas would flow into you easily.
