Outsourcing the Logo Design
Initially, our approach to logo design was to outsource it with specific instructions. We were keen on avoiding the traditional IT security stereotypes like shields, locks, and the color blue, which were prevalent in our industry. Unfortunately, many of the designs we received adhered to these conventions in some form or the other.
Bringing a Personal Touch
Frustrated by the lack of a unique design, we decided to take matters into our own hands. A brainstorming session with our in-house team led us to the whiteboard. During a creative silence, a glimmer of inspiration struck. The company name 'HackerOne', seemingly written in lowercase on the board, opened the avenue for a simple yet striking solution.
Creating the Icon
My team and I noticed the word 'HackerOne' written in a way that the letter 'h' could be interpreted as both an 'h' and a '1'. This subtle yet impactful idea led to the creation of a logo that is not only visually appealing but also versatile. The logo can function both as a standalone design and as part of the full company name 'HackerOne'. This logo, a simple 'h-1', is the logo that has been a part of our identity for the past six years and continues to serve as a symbol in the cybersecurity community worldwide.
The Cancer Ward Phase
Once the idea was on the board, a few attempts were made to design the logo. It was designed on a particularly lucid day using Photoshop, but the process of recreating it from scratch would be nearly impossible. The design needed to be unique and the simplicity of the 'h-1' reflected the ethos of simplicity and effectiveness that is central to our brand.
